newbie questions - connecting to the internet

Hi There

I am looking to use RIOT for an asset tracking application. And have a few, silly, questions.

1. how do I connect to the internet? Is there a border router, do we use serial to a linux host?

2. I want to use CoAP, is there an example, does it compile for for all host?
