Additional project packages

Perhaps I’m being overzealous here, but I’ve managed to create project specific modules and drivers by using the EXTERNAL_MODULES_DIRS variable. I would like to do the same thing with an external package such that the make system clones it from git and builds it like packages that come with RIOT. I’ve not been able to find a way to do this for packages.

Is this something that can be accomplished?

A Pull Request was opened recently to add that feature. So you can expect this to be possible rather soonish.
